A weighbridge, also known as a truck scale, is a large scale used to weigh entire vehicles and their contents. Typically installed at industrial sites, weighbridges measure the weight of goods in bulk, making them essential for industries like logistics, agriculture, construction, and mining.

Weighbridges work by using load cells—high-precision sensors installed within the platform—to measure the weight of a vehicle. When a vehicle drives onto the platform, the load cells detect the weight and send the data to a connected weight indicator or computer. This weight can be recorded for inventory, billing, and regulatory compliance.

There are several types of weighbridges designed for different applications:

Pit Weighbridge

A pit mounted weighbridge is installed in a specially constructed pit, allowing the platform to sit flush with ground level. This design is ideal for locations where space is limited, as it provides easy access without the need for ramps or raised surfaces. Vehicles can approach and position themselves on the weighbridge from any direction, making it highly efficient in confined spaces. Surface Weighbridge

A surface mounted weighbridge is installed above ground level and includes access ramps for vehicles, providing a straightforward and adaptable weighing solution. This type of weighbridge is ideal for sites where ease of installation and maintenance is a priority, as it does not require any excavation work. The image below showcases a Double Life weighbridge, highlighting the robust construction and reliability of this model. Surface weighbridges are particularly useful in locations where rapid setup and minimal ground preparation are essential.

Portable Weighbridge

A portable weighbridge is a moveable solution designed for temporary installations or locations with dynamic needs. Its structure makes it ideal for construction sites, mining operations, and other industries requiring frequent relocation. The image below features our Portaweigh weighbridge, illustrating its streamlined, compact design, built for reliable performance in various terrains. The portable weighbridge allows for accurate, on-demand vehicle weighing, adaptable to changing site conditions without the need for permanent groundwork.

Axle Weighbridge

An axle weighbridge is designed to measure the weight of each axle separately, offering an effective solution for analyzing weight distribution across a vehicle. By evaluating each axle independently, operators gain valuable insights into weight imbalances that could impact vehicle stability and wear.

The frequency of calibration depends on the weighbridge’s usage, the environmental conditions, and regulatory requirements. Heavy usage or exposure to harsh conditions may necessitate more frequent calibration, sometimes monthly or quarterly, while other weighbridges may require only an annual check.

Calibrating a weighbridge involves using test weights or specialized calibration equipment to verify and adjust the accuracy of the weighbridge. This process should be carried out by qualified technicians to ensure accurate and compliant measurements.

To obtain a weighbridge certificate, your weighbridge must undergo a calibration and verification process by a certified authority. This ensures that the weighbridge meets accuracy standards set by relevant regulatory bodies. Certification is often required to legally use a weighbridge for commercial transactions.

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the accuracy and longevity of your weighbridge. Routine checks help identify and address issues like wear and tear, environmental damage, or calibration drift, all of which can impact weighbridge performance. Maintenance also minimizes downtime and helps you avoid costly repairs.

Weighbridges are widely used across industries, including:

  • Transportation and Logistics: For tracking the weight of goods transported by trucks.
  • Agriculture: To measure harvested crops and manage inventory.
  • Construction and Mining: For weighing materials like gravel, sand, and ores.
  • Waste Management: To monitor waste disposal and recycling weights.
